At least 25 people, including four children, died and 28 wounded when a wall of a marriage hall fell during a storm in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district on Wednesday night, police said.
“The wall and a tin shed connected to it at the wedding venue collapsed due to a rain,” said Anil Tank, Superintendent of Police in Bharatpur. In this accident 26 injured, 15 were serious, he said, adding that the wall was nearly 90-foot-long and 12-13 feet in height and there were food stalls arranged along the wall for the marriage.
A case has been filed against the owner of the wedding hall, police said.
He said a study of all the wedding palaces and gardens in Bharatpur will be conducted to review safety and security measures.
“The wounded were rushed to nearby hospitals quickly. One injured has been referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur,” he said.
The bodies were shifted to a mortuary and post-mortem will be conducted today, police sources said.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje condoled the deaths and commanded officers concerned for proper treatment of the wounded.
Rajasthan is one of India’s most desert states but suffers frequent dust storms during the hotter months.
