Four civilians, Army officer killed As Avalanche Hits Army Camp In Jammu And Kashmir

Five persons, including an Army officer, were killed in avalanches in Kashmir Valley’s Bandipora and Ganderbal districts on Wednesday. Four soldiers remain trapped beneath an avalanche.

An Army spokesman told The Hindu that one soldier has died in Sonamarg in Ganderbal district. “There are no missing persons,” said the spokesman.

A major avalanche had hit an Army installation in Sonamarg, where more than five feet snow has accumulated.

Four civilians killed

Four civilians were killed in another avalanche in Bandipora’s Gurez area.

“Four people died in the avalanche that struck Gurez’s Budugam on Tuesday night. A rescue operation has been launched with the help of the police and the Army,” sub-district magistrate Gurez Rouf-ur-Rehman said.

The bodies of Habibulah (50), Azizi (48), Gulshan Bano (19) and Irfan (17) have been recovered.

Kashmir has been witnessing heavy snowfall since Tuesday. The divisional administration has issued warnings of avalanches in higher reaches of north and south Kashmir.
