Amidst intense turmoil and confusion in Delhi’s domestic team camp just a week ahead of the new Ranji season, Indian bowler Ishant Sharma has been left out of the squad after failing to respond to the calls and text messages of the chief selector Vinay Lamba. Ishant, who was one of the chief architects of India’s historic series win in Sri Lanka, is currently in the senior team’s conditioning camp ahead of the South Africa series. Delhi kick-start their Ranji season against Rajasthan on October 1.
“We tried contacting Ishant but neither did he pick upcalls nor replied to our text messages. Also we don’t know whether he can play a first-class match during the period of his ban. If he is eligible to play we will add him in the squad,” Vinay Lamba was quoted as saying by PTI.
Long-serving all-rounder Rajat Bhati and left-arm spinner Pawan Negi were also omitted from the side, with the latter earning a spot in the India A side to face South Africa A in the warm-up match at Palam on September 29 on the same day.
“It is obviously a good feeling to be picked in the India A side. At the same time, a little disappointing I am not in the Delhi Ranji team. Having said that, the team announced is only for the Rajasthan game. Hopefully I will find a place in the team during the season, Negi was quoted as saying.
With the likes of Virender Sehwag and Mithun Manhas also jumping ships, Delhi face a tricky start to the season ahead. On the first day of the probables camp, three factions announced separate list of players, leading to utter chaos. In an emergent meeting last Tuesday, the DDCA brass decided to put an end to the uncertainty surrounding the coach and appointed the former India player Ajay Jadeja.
